Psalms 142–143

Psalms 142 and 143 are both psalms of lament and prayer written by King David during difficult times in his life, reflecting his deep distress and desperate need for God’s help.

Psalm 142

  • This psalm is titled A Maskil of David, when he was in the cave, probably the cave of Adullam where David fled from King Saul. It is a heartfelt prayer where David cries out to the Lord for mercy and refuge, pouring out his complaint and trouble before God (Psalm 142:1-2).
  • David describes his spirit as faint and overwhelmed, with enemies setting snares for him, and no one to help or care for him (v.3-4). Despite this, he declares God as his refuge and portion in the land of the living (v.5).
  • The psalm ends with a plea for deliverance from his persecutors and a request to be brought out of prison so he can thank God publicly, with the righteous gathering around him in gratitude for God’s goodness (v.6-7).

Psalm 143

  • Like Psalm 142, Psalm 143 is a prayer of David from a place of deep distress and exhaustion, reflecting his overwhelmed spirit and desperate need for guidance and deliverance (Psalm 143:4).
  • David asks God to hear his prayer and not enter into judgment with him but to act according to God's unfailing love and faithfulness (v.1-2).
  • He pleads for God’s guidance on level ground amid his enemies and for relief from his enemies who bring him low (v.7-8). David meditates on God's past faithfulness and expresses hope that God will deliver him again (v.5-6).
  • The psalm ends with David asking for God’s deliverance from death and enemies, requesting God's spirit to lead him, and expressing trust in the Lord as his refuge despite his troubles (v.9-12).
